The Los Angeles Dodgers are close to a deal that would take Nationals ace Max Scherzer along with All-Star Shortstop Trea Turner’s Trea Turner, according to ESPN’s Jeff Bassan. CBS Sports HQ’s Jim Bowden has confirmed the deal that will give Washington four prospects, including catcher Keibert Ruiz and right-winger Josiah Gray. Earlier in the day, Padres were close to a deal to acquire Scherzer, per Bowden, but that deal was never finalised.
Instead, the current World Series champions are set to shoot one of the biggest commercial blockbusters on deadlines in recent memory. Here’s a look at the full six-player deal:
Dodgers receive: RHP Max Scherzer and SS Trea Turner Nationals receive: C Keibert Ruiz, RHP Josiah Gray, Donovan Casey and RHP Gerardo Carrillo
Scherzer, the top player on the trading block, missed a scheduled start recently due to discomfort in his triceps, but he put those concerns to rest with a powerful outing against Velez on Thursday. He allowed one run in six innings and in his last frame Scherzer scored 97 mph using his Fastball. This season, Scherzer reached a 2.76 ERA with 147 strikes and 28 walks in 111 runs. In other words, he’s nearing a peak in 2021. He owes a salary of $34.5 million this season and is eligible for free agency next winter.
Turner, 28, is currently discharged after testing positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday. In the season, he made .322/.369/.521 (146 OPS+) with 18 home runs and 21 steals (in 24 attempts). Turner, a debut star in 2021, will remain under team control through the 2022 season and should become the starting point for the Dodgers, with current Cory Seeger sidelined with a broken hand.

Scherzer originally joined the Nationals on a seven-year deal worth $191 million prior to the 2015 season. This contract is now emerging as one of the best free agent deals ever handed out to a Ramy.
Scherzer’s situation was more complicated than the average commercial filter for a variety of reasons. He had the ability to veto any deal thanks to his rights of 10-5, which is a great way to say he has over 10 years of service time in the big league and at least five consecutive years with his current team. Furthermore, the direction of the Nationals’ deadline has been unclear until recently, and owner Ted Lerner has been known to have struck deals in the past, including a 2018 agreement that would have sent defensive player Bryce Harper to the Houston Astros.
Ruiz, 23, is an attacking player who has appeared in eight major league games. He’s spent most of this season in Triple-A, hitting .311/.381/.631 with 16 home runs and about as many walks (23) as hits (27). Ruiz’s strength gains (whom he has never seen more than 12 times in a season) were accompanied by a drastic shift in his tennis profile: According to FanGraphs, his ball rating fell from 49 percent to 24 percent. If these changes are here to stay, he may prove to be the always rare double brace.
Gray, 23, recently made his league debut. He’s been in four Triple-A games this season, racking up a 2.87 ERA and 11 strike-to-walk ratio. Gray showed four pitches: a mid-’90s fastball, two breaking balls, and a change. He has a proven track record of hitting and should be able to step into the vacant Scherzer position in the Washington rotation.
