MLB Trade Rumors: Dodgers Land Max Scherzer; Yankees out on Trevor Storey after Rizzo’s relegation

The Dodgers approve of Scherzer’s movie success, Turner

The Washington Nationals and Padres were supposed to come close to an agreement on a trade that would send right-back Max Scherzer to San Diego. But this deal never took place. Instead, Scherzer heads to the Dodgers—and brings Shortstop Trea Turner with him. Ruling World Champion and opponent Padres NL West secured a deal by sending four prospects to Washington. Scherzer, 37, as of Tuesday, missed a scheduled start recently due to discomfort in his triceps during a hitting practice. In the 19 outings this season that went into Thursday, he collected 2.76 PM (135+ PM) and 5.25 walking strike percentage. He just made his eighth All-Star Game in his career and won three Cy Young Awards, including most recently in 2017. Scherzer set out to calm triceps fears with a strong start against the Phillies on Thursday.

Turner, 28, is currently out of the house after testing positive for COVID-19. He’s made .322/.369/.521 (146 OPS+) with 18 home runs and 21 steals (in 24 attempts) this season. Turner will not qualify for free agency until after next season. Corey Seeger, the current short position for the Dodgers, is currently out with a broken hand.

Yankees out of story after Rizzo’s landing

According to MLB Network’s John Heyman, the Yankees will be open to moving first baseman Luke Voit as a way to create additional budget space. Voight, who is currently on the list with a knee infection, owed $4.7 million a season, which suggests that the Yankees won’t save much money in the trade. However, New York seems to be doing its best to achieve two things: adding talent without exceeding the luxury tax threshold.

With a deal with Anthony Rizzo Thursday night that included paying the Cubs the rest of his paycheck, the Yankees now appear to be knocked out by Trevor Storey, according to MLB Network’s John Heyman. However, it makes sense that Voit is still available.

The Mets may be close to a major addition

The Mets are trying to hold onto the top spot in the balanced but unsurprising NL East. If it weren’t for an excessive string of injuries all season, New York might have a more comfortable edge over the Phillies and Braves. Since better health may be out of their immediate control, the Mets may be looking to make some notable additions before Friday arrives. Speaking of which, ESPN’s Kelly McDaniel reports that something big may be in the works:

The Mets have been linked to a host of finalists: Kris Bryant of the Cubs, Trevor Story of the Rockies, Jose Berrios of the Twins, among them. Other targets may include Javier Baez and Craig Kimbrel of Cubs. The rotation numbers will get healthier in the near-to-medium term, which could mean Bryant or Storey is the most likely target for the Queenslanders. Both would make a lot of sense as the Mets deal with the uncertainty surrounding Francisco Lindor’s tilting injury and the general lack of depth in the squad. However, Berrios is still of interest, although the price may rise now that Scherzer appears to be out of the market:

Disappointing twins are sellers, but there is no guarantee that they will part with ace Jose Péreos. That’s because he doesn’t qualify for free agency until after the 2022 season, and the twins may want to keep him for that extra year. However, the same extra year of team control means the twins could demand very little in return if they decide to move the 27-year-old star twice.

As noted above, the Red Sox has some interest, and MLB Network’s John Morosi reports that the sailors are also having discussions with the twins:

The M’s recently added left-wing Tyler Anderson to the spin, but that may not be done as they try to make up the ground in an AL wild card fight.

For the Dodgers’ family, the news that Scherzer is likely headed to San Diego has fueled L.A.’s interest in Piraeus:

Jon Gray outside of Coors Field is an interesting proposition, but Berrios is the most stable amount.

Ray, the Mariners exchange painkillers

Rays and Mariners agreed to a trade that would send loyalist Diego Castillo to the Pacific Northwest in exchange for relieving JT Chargois and a referral of Austin Shenton, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Castillo, 27, has recorded a 2.72 ERA and 4.90 strike-to-walk ratio during his first 36 runs of the season. He is under team control during the 2024 season.

Chargois, 30, collected a 3.00 p.m. and 4.83 strike-to-walk ratio in the Mariners’ 30 runs this season. Rise is his fourth organization. If he continues, he will not qualify for free agency until after the 2025 season.

Meanwhile, Shenton is 23 years old and enlisted in 2019. He has hit .300/.414/.566 this season across two tiers (High and Double A). He hits the ball hard and controls the hit zone, making it an interesting prospect.

Hudson, 34 and in the final year of his contract, boasts a 2.20 ERP per season, has a 2.99 ERP and 3.27 kbps since the start of the 2019 season.
