An internal CDC document obtained by several news outlets warns that the COVID-19 Delta variant may be more susceptible to severe disease and can spread as quickly as chickenpox.

The Washington Post, which first reported on the CDC slideshow, said new research also indicates that fully vaccinated people can spread the virus at higher rates than previously thought. The newspaper reported that the CDC document says health officials need to acknowledge that “the war has changed.”

The CDC did not immediately respond to an email hours later from Fox News. The information in the document reportedly played a role in the new mask guidelines announced earlier this week. The Biden administration has been more assertive in recent days to force Americans to sign up for a vaccine due to the emergence of variants.

Admiral Brett Giroir, a former assistant secretary of health under President Trump, told Fox News’ America Reports Thursday that the alternative is so contagious that it’s “just a matter of time” before everyone who hasn’t been vaccinated and hasn’t received COVID-19 comes with infection.

“If you have pre-existing immunity, you have some protection, but more and more data is telling us that this protection is not very good against delta,” he said. “Remember, you can get the flu every year. Not because your immunity isn’t good. It’s because the flu changes and delta is really a new strain that’s different from everything we’ve seen. So, I’m really worried that natural immunity, though real, won’t be enough. against delta”.

Giroir’s comments appear to mirror the CDC document. The agency said there should be a new public message to get people to sign up for the vaccine.

There have been lingering problems for those who are resistant to vaccines. The Food and Drug Administration has not fully approved the vaccines that are still given under an emergency use authorization.

The death toll in the United States remains relatively low. There were 398 deaths from the virus Thursday in the United States, compared to the winter months when the numbers were ten times that number.

Matthew Seeger, a communications expert at Wayne State University, told the newspaper that health officials may have had some messaging issues with the public.

“We’ve done an amazing job telling the public that these are miracle vaccines,” he said. “It’s possible that we have fallen a little bit into the trap of over-reassuring, which is one of the challenges in any crisis communication setting.”

The Washington Post report noted that fully vaccinated people who contract the delta type can carry the same viral load as those without the vaccine and infect others.

The New York Times, which also viewed the document, reported that CDC chief Dr. Rochelle B. Walinsky said transmission from vaccinated individuals is rare, but some scientists believe it is more common than previously thought.

Jon Moore, a virologist at Weill Cornell Medicine, told The Times that Delta “is the worrisome variant that we already knew about.”

“But the sky is not falling and vaccination still strongly protects against poor outcomes,” he said.
