Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says parents should decide whether their children wear masks at school

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis pledged Friday to prevent any local school district from requiring students to wear masks even as the nation grapples with the resurgence of the coronavirus.

The Sunshine State CEO said he disagrees with guidelines issued Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommend that all students in kindergarten through 12th grade wear blankets when they return to classes this fall.

DeSantis said school districts in his state would not have the option to designate such a mandate.

The governor told his supporters at Cape Coral Restaurant.

“We believe this is the fairest way to do so,” he added.

DeSantis went on to say that he and his wife have always opposed masks for their children.

He said, “I have young children. My wife and I will not wear masks with the children. We never had.” “I want to see my children smile. I want them to have fun.”

The Florida Educational Association, which represents 150,000 public school employees, said DeSantis wrongly applies a “one size fits all” policy.

According to a union statement, “No matter whether we live in urban South Florida, the rural Panhandle or somewhere in between, we all want our children to be healthy and safe.”

“Unfortunately, through his words and actions, Governor DeSantis has made clear that he does not respect the freedom of locally elected officials to do what they believe is best for their communities.”
