Javier Baez heads from Windy City to the Big Apple.
The Mets are finalizing a deal to handicap the player amid a fire sale at Friday’s Cubs trade deadline, along with bowler Trevor Williams, according to multiple reports on Friday.
Trade awaits medical review as Pete Crowe Armstrong — the Mets’ first-round draft pick for 2020 — goes to Chicago.
Baez will likely become the Mets’ short stop as Francisco Lindor recovers from a stint in IL with a right-handed slasher. When the $341 million star returns to the lineup, Baez will switch to second base — a move he’s already said he’d be cool with.
“If I go to a free agency, I’d like to play Francisco Lindor,” Baez said Tuesday during an interview with Mega 106.9 FM. “I loved playing with him in [2017 World Baseball Classic]. That’s the only option I’d take to play second base.”

Lindor was excited to see his fellow Puerto Ricans join the cause in Queens, writing “Heeeeeellllllll Yeeeeeeaaaaa” above the news on his Instagram story.
They are not the only ones excited about this move.
“I’ve always been a huge fan,” director Luis Rojas said of Baez. “He’s a guy if he goes 0 for 4 he can hit you with his glove or in the base lanes.”
The 28-year-old Golden Glove has hit 22 wreckers this season while hitting 0.292 and leading in 65 runs during 91 games with Chicago. He is set to enter free agency at the end of the 2021 season.
