Caleb Dressel broke his own world record in the men’s 100m butterfly en route to winning his second gold – his third overall – at the Tokyo Olympics.
Dressel finished first at 49.45, lowering his mark at the 2019 World Championships by 0.05.
Dressel descended from the blocks in .60, which is the fastest heat reaction time. He then led at 0.65, ahead of Hungarian Christoph Milak on the other hand, and broke the world record for returning home to set an all-time record.
Milac took the silver, while Switzerland’s Noe Ponte took the bronze
The 100 Fly Final was the first of three events Dressel is scheduled to contest in Saturday’s finals session. In just over 70 minutes, he will also race in the 50m freestyle semifinals and participate in the mixed mixed relay for the United States.
