Few users have reported a potentially serious issue that the LCD screens of Apple’s latest M1 MacBook Air and M1 MacBook Pro are easily cracked or damaged.
Owners have identified the supposed issue in an Apple Support Community forum that has posted multiple claims of cracked screens on their recently purchased M1 MacBook Air or recently purchased M1 MacBook Pro.
The post’s creator asserts that the problem manifested itself “without apparent reason” overnight.
They said, “I left my computer on top of my desk during the night and the next day I opened it, the screen had two small slits on the right which hurt the screen’s functionality.”
Specialists at an Apple-certified repair facility said the damage, described as “connection point breakage,” does not fall under the company’s standard warranty, and therefore will not be covered. Others who have experienced identical issues and have taken their unit to the Apple Store have been told that the damage was a “hot point,” indicating a piece of debris trapped between the screen and the top case. At least one user has been told that a “pressure crack” caused by poor handling has caused a crack in the screen glass.
For most people, the explanations given were unsatisfactory as they claimed there were no wrong crumbs or waste before shutting down the clamshell computer. Others said they were using the device normally and not exerting undue force on the screen. While Apple covered repair costs in some cases, many users have had to pay more than $500 in screen repair or replacement costs.
Nearly 50 people responded to the original post saying they encountered the problem. The Reddit thread referenced in the Apple Communities post appears to confirm the issue with initial disclosures dating back to December 2020.
9to5Mac reported on this topic earlier today.
It is unclear how many MacBooks have been affected by the screen cracking anomaly, and its cause is unknown. Some speculate that the gap between the screen and the top case is too narrow, allowing even the smallest bits of debris to hit the LCD screen.
Several members of the Apple Support Forum claim that the company is hiding the problem, but there is no clear evidence that Apple is aware of a widespread problem or that it has developed a policy to refuse relevant fixes.
