LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Las Vegas dad who contracted COVID-19 while his fiancée was on leave from the hospital texted, “I should have gotten the damn vaccine,” she later told Nexstar’s KLAS.

Michael Freddy, 39, a father of five, and his fiancée, Jessica de Prez, traveled with their family to San Diego in mid-July.

Du Breeze said that when Freddy got home, he developed a painful rash.

“He had chills, he couldn’t eat, he couldn’t rest, he couldn’t sleep,” said Du Pres. “All symptoms of sun poisoning.”

De Preez said he later tested positive for the coronavirus and developed difficulty breathing with pneumonia in both lungs.

“Gosh [expletive] Allah. That’s horrible,” Freddy de Prez sent in a text message from the hospital. “I should have gotten the damn vaccine.”

“I went to the intensive care unit that night to see him, after receiving one of the worst phone call updates ever,” De Preez wrote in a GoFundMe post. “The nurse asked me to call his next of kin and take all his belongings home with me.”

De Preez said Freddie died in hospital Thursday morning.

“We were just running late and now we’re thinking that if we just got vaccinated a week ago or a month ago when one of our jobs got something of a vaccination, it might still be here,” she said.

She said De Pres and her oldest child received the first dose of the vaccine when Freddie was admitted to the hospital.

She hopes her family’s story will prompt others to take the virus seriously and avoid a similar tragedy. GoFundMe for the family has raised nearly $20,000 as of noon Friday.
