Team USA topped the leaderboard in swimming events in Tokyo this year after Americans Caleb Dressel and Katie Ledecky won additional gold medals on Day 8 of the Olympics.

Ledecky, 24, lit up the aquatics center in Tokyo on Saturday morning after taking home her second gold medal at the Games in the women’s 800-meter freestyle. Ledecky continued to dominate the event, winning it for the third time in a row.

With a time of 8:12.57, Ledecky beat Australian star Ariarn Titmus by just 1.26 seconds. After losing to her in both singles matches, Lydecky wasn’t going to collapse under the pressure.

“I could see it all the way,” Ledecky said. “I was trying to keep tabs on it and trying to work my way out a little bit every 50. I knew it was just going to lie dormant there the whole time.”

On the men’s side, Caleb Dressel cemented himself as one of the world’s greatest swimmers after breaking the world record in the 100m butterfly, a record he set two years ago at the 2019 World Championships.

Dessel won his third gold medal after defeating Hungary’s Christoph Milak, winner of the men’s 200-meter fly.

“It’s going to get me out of business one day, so I’m just trying to hold on for as long as possible,” Dressel said. “Kristoff executed perfectly. We both swam exactly the race we needed to.”

While the Americans dominated their solo events, the mixed variety was a mess from the start for Team USA.

“Fifth place is not acceptable for USA swimming,” Dressel said. “It bites.”
