USA Gymnastics announced in a statement Friday that Simone Biles will not compete in the bar finals or individual jumping finals on Sunday at the Tokyo Olympics.

The phenomenon decided not to compete in this weekend’s events after consulting with medical staff, according to USA Gymnastics. She will be replaced in the vault by MyKayla Skinner and recent gold medalist Suni Lee will represent Team USA in uneven bars.

Biles mostly withdrew from the Olympic competition in Tokyo after declaring she was not in the right mental state to perform, while also struggling with “sprains” – a confusing phenomenon that causes gymnasts to lose their sense of centering in the air, which frankly sounds terrifying.

Like so many others who have wrapped their arms around Biles to support her as she continues to focus on well-being, USA Gymnastics said this:

“We remain in awe of Simon, who continues to approach this situation with courage and grace, and all the athletes who have progressed through these unexpected circumstances.”

G/O Media may get commission

As of Saturday morning, it’s not clear if Biles will compete in the finals on the floor exercise and balance beam. If she ultimately chooses not to, that’s okay. A crowd of people who can’t help but claim to dip Double Stuf Oreo in a glass of thick whole milk because their most athletic act will still be pissed off and shot in the mouth (such an asshole), but their words in the end won’t. Theme.

What matters is that Biles takes the time she needs before she rushes back onto the mat, because as she and the other gymnasts have said, the swings are no joke. They are dangerous. A gold medal is not worth anyone risking their safety.

We’ll see what GOAT decides in her next competitions, but regardless, we still root for her and want her to come back stronger than ever at her own pace.
