About 74 percent of the cases studied involved fully vaccinated individuals. Of this group, only 4 people (1.2 percent of the total number of cases), aged 20 to 70, were hospitalized. Two of them had underlying medical conditions.

About 79 percent of those infected said they had symptoms, including cough, headache, sore throat and fever. Nobody died.

This does not mean that vaccines are not effective against new variants. The CDC report added Friday that the more people vaccinated, the more likely it is that vaccinated people will account for a portion of the positive cases.

Most cases included a delta variable.

The report showed that almost all positive cases were caused by the delta variant (B.1.617.2). The delta variant is one of the most worrisome types of coronavirus to date, and is known to be highly transmissible and cause more serious disease than other strains. It is currently the most common type in the United States, and is responsible for more than 82 percent of cases nationwide. Public health officials have advised that vaccines are effective against the variant and prevent death.

All vaccines are represented

Breakouts in the Provincetown cohort have included each of the three major vaccines available in the United States, with rates similar to statewide vaccination rates among fully vaccinated people.

Most of the cases are related to travelers

Visitors to Barnstable County accounted for nearly 60 percent of Provincetown-related cases. In early July, the town held several major tourist events for the Fourth of July holiday.

As people, including vaccinators, flock to summer events, crowds and lax COVID-19 safety precautions are a concern for health officials. The CDC report concluded that the investigation into the Provincetown outbreak shows that jurisdictions should consider expanding safety protocols against the virus, including enforcing indoor masks, regardless of vaccination status.
