Olympic gymnastics live updates – MyKayla Skinner won the silver, Suni Lee is still competing in the event finals

[ad_1]

On Sunday, newly minted Olympic all-around champion Sonny Lee will compete for gold on uneven bars. The Americans can do it – but it should be a very competitive final at the Tokyo Olympics.

Simone Biles announced on Saturday that she has withdrawn from the vault and bars finals, and on Sunday she was withdrawing from the floor exercise, leaving the floor and vault medals wide open. American MyKayla Skinner replaced Biles in the jump and took advantage of the opportunity, winning the silver medal in an epic podium battle. On the men’s front, Yuel Moldauer of the United States competed on the floor and Alec Yoder took the medal on the pommel horse.

It all started at 4AM ET – and we’ve got all the action below with live updates all the time.

Women’s jump: Andrade continues to dazzle, and Skinner’s unexpected Olympic medal

A week ago, MyKayla Skinner thought her Olympic competitor was over in the qualifying round. On Sunday, she stood on an Olympic podium, the silver medalist in the jump.

Yes so proud of my big OMG 😭❤️ https://t.co/NNaIkU244U

With defending Olympic jumping champion Simone Biles — whose withdrawal put Skinner in the event — loudly cheering her up from the stands, Skinner opened the encounter with the clean Cheng. This was her best jump in the games and she got 15.033, a higher score than any of her vaults during qualifying. In her second vault, Amanar, Skinner jumped slightly to the left on her descent but kept her feet within good enough range for a 14.8 score and a total of 14.916.

Out of her Olympic silver medal in everything, Brazil’s Rebecca Andrade competed with two gymnasts later in the same vaults and with a larger capacity, outpacing Skinner by just over a tenth of a point and eventually outpacing the gold. Brazil had never won an Olympic medal in women’s gymnastics until earlier this week, and now Andrade has won two.

Unlike qualifying and team competitions, gymnasts are not provided with what’s known as a “one-touch warm-up” or a last-minute opportunity to warm up on a competition rig right before they compete. This rule has been the subject of much debate, as the conversation at these Games has centered around the health and safety of athletes, particularly in gymnastics.

In Jade Carey’s first basement, she missed the runway when she got close to the tee and somehow had enough to throw a fold off the table. She saved her body from injury but the mistake ended her night. Immediately, gymnastics fans took to Twitter to invite the #onetouchfinals. Impressively, though, Curry regrouped, made his way back to the start of the runway and performed at the beautiful Amanar. Her father, Brian, who is also her coach, hugged her tightly and comforted her after her turn.

The final results:

Rebecca Andrade – Brazil – 15.083

MyKayla Skinner, USA – 14.916

Yoo Seo Jeong, Korea – 14,733

Alexa Moreno, Mexico – 14.716

Angelina Melnikova, Republic of China – 14,683

Liliia Akhaimova, Republic of China – 14.666.200

Shalon Olsen, Canada – 13.066.2007

Jade Carey, USA – 12.416.2020

The Men’s Floor Exercise: A History of Israel

In the first of four gymnastics finals on Sunday at Ariak Gymnastics Center, Israeli Artem Dolgobat won the gold on the floor.

It was Israel’s first-ever medal in gymnastics and is the country’s only gold medal at the 2020 Olympics so far, and third overall.

Dolgopyat, the European 2020 champion in the event, achieved the highest scores in qualifying and continued his dominance on Sunday. His tag was tied with Spaniard Riderly Zapata, but Dolgopyat won the second tiebreak due to a higher difficulty score.

Zapata took the silver and China’s Ruting Xiao won the bronze.

The final results:

Artem Dolgupat, Israel – 14.933.0000

Riderly Zapata – Spain – 14.933

Ruoteng Xiao, China 14.766.2007

Seungyeon Ryo, South Korea – 14,233

Milad Karimi, Kazakhstan – 14.133

Yule Moldauer, USA – 13533

Nikita Nagorny, Republic of China – 13.066.00

Hansol Kim, South Korea – 13.066.2007

Let the individual event finals begin

Sunday is the first day of the singles event finals, and it will be a mix of men’s and women’s events. The top eight players with the highest scores advance from the playoffs in each event, with a maximum of two per country. However, the initial findings have now been erased. Sunday’s highest score wins.

Schedule – you might want some coffee for this:

4 a.m. ET: Men’s Floor 4:45 a.m. ET: Ladies’ basement 5:45 a.m. ET: Pommel horse for men 6:27 a.m. ET: Uneven bars for women

Women’s vault: With defending Olympic jumping champion and two-time world champion Simone Biles withdrawing, women’s vaulting can be very worrying. American MyKayla Skinner took Biles’ place, and she and fellow American Jade Carey have been linked with the highest difficulty totals in the playoffs. Either of them could win gold, although the results of Skinner’s execution were lower than Curry’s in the preliminary round. Overall silver medalist Rebecca Andrade scored a goal between Curry and Skinner in the playoffs, and she should also be considered the favorite.

The men’s pommel horse: American men’s best hope for an Olympic medal comes in the event, as pommel horse specialist Alec Yoder qualifies for fourth. It should be noted, however, that the top three qualifiers (Chinese Taipei Li Chih-kai, Ireland’s Rhys McClingan, and Japan’s Kohei Kamiyama) all tied for 15,266, with Yoder scoring 15,200. Anyone can be gone here.

Women’s Uneven Bars: Suni Lee finished second in the qualifiers and has a real chance of winning the gold medal here, especially since she didn’t perform at full difficulty that day. Unfortunately for her, she was drawn to competition first, which is considered a recording disadvantage. Watch to see if she gets all of her early release moves. If you do, you will have the highest difficulty score of the group.

The top qualifier was Belgium’s Nina Derville, the two-time world champion on the bars and probably my biggest threat to the event, but from top to bottom, this whole squad is stacked. Bills qualified last. She will be replaced by Frenchwoman Melanie de Jesus dos Santos. – Amy Van Deusen

Looks like I’ll only compete with Leo again. I can’t wait to compete in the vault finals. Do it for us Simone_Biles It’s time baby!

– MyKayla Skinner (Harmer) (@mykaylaskinner) July 31, 2021 Can you tell me more about Americans?

Why, yes we can. You may have heard of Suni Lee by now, but even if you haven’t, check out this story about her impressive overall win on Thursday. Bonus: There’s a must-watch video of her and her dad doing backflips. Trust us and go take a look.

Jade Carey and MyKayla Skinner qualified for Tokyo as singles competitors, and both had wild rides during these Olympics. Skinner thought her Olympic experience was over after the qualifying rounds, while Curry replaced Biles all over when Biles dropped out.
