Cleveland – “Awesome!”
This is what my wife Roberta shouted when she screamed across my desk about the Browns signing Nick Chubb for a 3-year contract extension.
But she wasn’t the only Browns fan who cheered when she heard the news.
When general manager Andrew Perry and coach Kevin Stefansky took charge of the Browns in 2020, they spoke of players who were “tough, intelligent and accountable”. The Browns have plenty of players to describe, but the 25-year-old Chubb should be at the front of the line.
In the field, reminds me of Jim Brown.
That’s not to say the 5-foot-11 and 227-pounder would be among the greatest appearances of all time. But there are a few times every season when a rookie Chubb displays a combination of speed and power…well, it’s something I haven’t seen in an orange helmet since Jim Brown.
When Chubb scores a touchdown, he hands the ball to the referee. This is also reminiscent of Brown, who told young players, “Act like you’ve been there before.”
Chubb scored 30 TDs in his three years with the Browns. Yes, he’s been in the end zone before. Oh my gosh, Chubb averaged 10 yards per carry in the fourth quarter of last season!!! This is not a typo.
It’s also a testament to how Stefanski grabs his two backs – Karim Hunt and Chubb – and balances their two campaigns, so both were at their best when that meant more than ever in the final stretch of the game.

Both sides wanted a deal
A three-year, $36.6 million extension is healthy, especially with a full $20 million guarantee. Chubb could have lobbied for something like Christian McCaffrey of Carolina ($64 million, guaranteed $36 million) or Alvin Camara’s $75 million ($34 million guaranteed) deal from New Orleans. These numbers are from overthecap.com.
But Brown could have remained strict with their analytics, which does not like to pay more than $10 million a year. So both sides moved.
Most importantly, both sides moved ahead of the season opener. When a player has the chance to be an unrestricted free agent, the chances of him retaining him diminish as the season progresses. Instead, both sides did it now.
Chubb will play this season for $3.4 million in his original deal. Then comes the 3-year extension. This ties Chubb for four seasons. Hunt is under contract for another two seasons for $12 million.
Recently, Hunt said this about Chubb: Pay The Man!
They did just that.

The big plan
The front office of Chief Strategy Officer Paul Depodesta and GM Andrew Perry faced two major decisions about the approach of major players to free agency.
It was initially Miles Jarrett in 2020. He signed a 5-year $125 million extension prior to last season. Now, they also retain control of Chubb, who wanted to stay.
“I don’t like uncertainty, and here in Cleveland I know what I have with the players and coaches,” he said during a small camp. “This is Cleveland, and I don’t know what it would be like anywhere else. So Cleveland is where I want to be and that is my main focus — to be here in Cleveland.”
Sometimes, the player says that to the media. He then asks his agent to make him the highest-paid player in his position. Les Chubb, who rushed 3,557 yards in his first three seasons, averaged 5.2 yards per carry.
Chubb underwent major knee surgery while he was in Georgia. He also missed four games in 2020 due to an MCL knee problem. This deal gives him some safety in a situation where his running back takes a heavy physical beating.
I thank former GM John Dorsey for taking on Chap in the second round of the 2018 draft, a choice that came from Brock Osweiler’s Brown deal with Houston — a creative trade put together by former GM Sachi Brown.
It was Brown’s pupils – Depodesta and Perry – who worked on the contract extension.
No wonder so many fans are screaming “Awesome!” This morning.
