Matt Turner made an excellent save just 10 minutes after – his 20th in the tournament – from Rogelio Funes Mori’s header with the goal of keeping the score level early.

The United States missed a huge opportunity to take the lead in the 25th minute when, after Mexico was sent off in their own half, Sebastian Leggett hit Paul Areola in the area, but his shot bounced off the post by only the goalkeeper.

Despite having the best shots and possession, Mexico failed to score, as a volatile American team entered the first half with a 0-0 tie.

Urbelín Pineda missed two chances to put Mexico ahead to start the second half, one with a wide-open shot in the penalty area and the second from close range on a ball from the right flank.

But the United States was not deterred, and Matthew Hoppe got two good chances, which were blocked by the Mexican defense, while Areola hit a ball on the doorstep impossible to stop by Alfredo Talavera goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera as the second half progressed.

The thrilling end to regular time saw both teams create decent chances without scoring and the match went into extra time.

The extra 30 minutes continued on the theme of the game: plenty of action but no goals, until Robinson hit a Kellyn Acosta free kick in the 117th minute and beat Talavera to give the United States a massive win.

The United States, who claimed their seventh Gold Cup title, beat Mexico in the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League Final with Christian Pulisic’s overtime victory on June 6 in the two teams’ last meeting.

The United States entered the game on Sunday as the underdog because several of their top players from the Nations League were not on the Gold Cup squad, so they can prepare for their European season.

In fact, there were only three players left from the Nations League tournament compared to Sunday’s eight starters who also played in the Nations League final.
