Canada executed the penalty after the VAR determined that American Tierna Davidson had fouled Canadian Dean Rose inside the penalty area.

This will be the first time Canada will compete for the gold medal in women’s soccer. The team did not qualify for the Olympics in 1996, 2000 or 2004. The team finished eighth at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and won the bronze medal at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

Canada also reached the 2015 Women’s World Cup quarter-finals and the Round of 16 at the 2019 World Cup and has never been higher than fourth in the event.

The United States failed to score anything against Canadian goalkeeper Stephanie Lapp. The USA had 56% of possession time and six shots on target compared to 44% of Canadian possession time and only two shots on target.

The United States looked shaky during Olympic play. The team lost 3-0 in its opening match against Sweden, beat New Zealand and then drew with Australia to reach the knockout stage with difficulty. The United States needed a penalty shootout to defeat the Netherlands before facing Canada.
