American gymnast Jade Curry won the gold medal in the floor exercises on Monday.
Curry, 21, of Arizona, bounced back from a fearsome stumble during Sunday’s vaulting final to take the lead on the ground with a score of 14.366. The medal is the fifth the US women’s gymnastics team has won in Tokyo even as Simone Biles has attended four finals to focus on her mental health.
Italy’s Vanessa Ferrari, fourth at the 2008 and 2016 Olympics, took the silver. The dramatic performance of the 30-year-old sparked a roar from various federations within the Ariake Gymnastics Center.
Angelina Melnikova of the Russian Olympic Committee and Mai Murakami of Japan took the bronze with a score of 14.166 points. Players had the same degree of difficulty and execution point in their routine.
