TOKYO – A 5.8-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan and can be felt in Tokyo, the US Geological Survey reported.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of just over 6 miles 75 miles east-northeast of the city of Hasaki, Japan. That city is located 75 miles east of Tokyo.

NBC News anchor Lester Holt tweeted that he felt the earthquake early Wednesday morning.

I felt what seemed to be a slight earthquake here in Tokyo. About 5:33 a.m. Wednesday here. Rolled for a good 20 seconds. Interestingly enough, my crew of 3 floors below felt nothing. The Japan Meteorological Agency averages 6.0 degrees.
