Former Liverpool defender turned Sky Sports analyst Jamie Carragher has warned Harry Kane that he could lose his reputation if he leaves Tottenham for Manchester City.
Kane, who is looking to end his 16-year association with the club in order to win titles before it’s too late, failed to show up at Tottenham’s training ground this week even though he was due to have routine Covid and blood tests early on Monday.
It is understood that Spurs were not notified of this by the player, and at this point no transfer request had been received, but similarly they were not told when he would be ready to return to Hotspur Way to join new coach Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad.
With the situation on the brink of getting ugly, Carragher was reminded of the time Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard almost left the club he loves with Chelsea in a bid to win more trophies.

However, after a period of reflection, Gerrard made a dramatic turn, and ended up staying with Merseyside FC for a number of years, before eventually moving to MLS at the end of his career.
Carragher wrote in the Telegraph: “He [Gerrard] Think carefully about the damage to his reputation and that’s what set him back.
“He knew Chelsea were better than Liverpool and would have won more trophies. We all did, just as we know Manchester City have won and will continue to win more than Tottenham. But sometimes some things are special and you don’t spoil those special things.”

Carragher knows his former teammate was in a different predicament than he is now, especially considering that Gerrard had just inspired his hometown club to win the Champions League.
Therefore, he is not saying that Kane should not leave Spurs, but he does warn the attacker that he could tarnish his reputation if he continues to approach things in a negative way.
“Tottenham is not Liverpool in terms of titles and history, and I’m not saying that Harry Kane should stay at Tottenham.”

“I understood that he wanted to win the Premier League, win the Champions League. I have no problem with him wanting to go to the city. But the way he is trying to get that transfer by not going into training is worrying.
“My message to Harry will be the same as it was to Stevie: Don’t spoil your reputation for this; always think about your name and standing in the game. To me, that’s just as important as any award Harry could win.”
