In a bold move that certainly didn’t come to fruition, a pair of PlayStation 5 development kits appeared on eBay yesterday – although the listings didn’t last more than a few hours before they were removed.
As spotted by Twitter user iDCx1337, the listings were for the DFI-D1000AA kit and the DFI-T1000AA test kit (thanks, Kotaku). A screenshot of the DFI-D1000AA kit, complete with two all-black DualSense controllers, showed that the listing appeared to have reached the bid price of €2850 (£2423) before it was pulled.

It’s still unclear if eBay decided to remove the listings or if Sony was involved, but either way, the listings only seem to have survived a few hours before mysteriously disappearing. We still don’t know how the seller obtained these kits: development kits are usually delivered to developers under a strict non-disclosure agreement. It looks like these two have somehow managed to get into the hands of someone who was willing to take a bet on the eBay listing.

The test kit looks pretty close to the final PS5 released, but the dev kit is a different story — it’s a true chunky unit that wouldn’t have disappeared in my parents’ living room in the early 2000s. An image of the dev kit was originally leaked in November 2019, although that image had a more silvery look. Tom Warren of The Verge commented at the time to confirm that the development kit was real, and noted that the large V-shaped size makes it “more stackable for developers running multiple stress tests.” And of course, it was designed with cooling in mind – pushing air out from the sides and center.
I’m about to say something controversial…but I actually prefer the dev kit over the PS5’s final build.
