Lionel Messi is said to be further than ever from renewing his contract with Barcelona in a radical turn of events.

The Nou Camp legend, 34, is currently a free agent but was widely expected to sign a new deal and extend his 21-year stay at the club.

However, Spanish newspaper Marca now claims a renewal is ‘almost impossible’, creating a very real possibility that Barcelona could lose Messi after Thursday’s talks.

According to the report, the La Liga giants are already thinking about how to communicate news of a possible departure to his supporters.

Negotiations with Messi were complicated by financial problems at the club.

It was understood that the Argentine star had agreed to cut his salary by 50 per cent in order to agree to a new five-year contract.

Now Catalan radio outlet RAC1 says Messi is no longer happy with what would have been a £250,000-a-week cut, while the striker also has concerns about the quality of the squad.

But the situation is made more difficult by La Liga’s agreement with CVC to invest 2.3 billion pounds in the first division in Spain.

Barcelona is believed to be opposed to the deal, as it would officially end their pursuit of the European League, which they continue to push alongside Real Madrid and Juventus, despite widespread anger over the proposal.

With constant attempts to balance their pay bill, it is now impossible for Barcelona to agree to new terms with Messi, while also rejecting the CVC deal and continuing with the Super League bid.

The developments have left President Joan Laporta in an awkward position, having been elected on a promise to keep Messi at the club.

Barcelona are powerless to prevent the Argentine from joining a European rival, with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain previously linked to his signature.
