The mother and father of a five-year-old boy who was found dead in a river in Wales have appeared in court, along with a 13-year-old.

Logan Mwangi, also known as Logan Williamson, was found in the Ogmore River near Bandy Park in Bridgend after he was reported missing around 5.45am from his home on Saturday.

Logan was taken to the Princess of Wales Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

Police officers discovered Logan’s body on the river bank. Cardiff Court of First Instance heard, Thursday, that the cause of his death was a ruptured liver, as well as internal injuries to the back of his head and a fractured collarbone.

Logan’s father-in-law John Cole, 39, of Sarn, Bridgend, appeared before the judges accused of Logan’s murder.

Cole, along with the mother of schoolboy Ingrad Williamson, 30, of Sarn, and a 13-year-old boy, whose name cannot be named for legal reasons, also appeared in court on charges of perverting the course of justice.

Judges returned Cole and Williamson to custody, while the 13-year-old was remanded in the care of the local authority.

Court chair Elaine Farthing said the three will appear in Newport Crown Court Friday morning.

The charges allege that Cole killed Logan between July 28 and August 1.

Cole, Williamson and the 13-year-old boy allegedly perverted the course of justice on the same dates.

The three defendants spoke only to confirm their names, dates of birth and addresses and did not file pleas for the charges against them.

After news of his death emerged, family friends hailed Logan as a “nice, funny, well-mannered, handsome and intelligent boy”.

People left flowers, trophies, toys and dolls in front of the police cordon surrounded by the river.

South Wales Police announced that Cole, Williamson and the boy had been charged just before 1am on Thursday.
