More than 30,000 new cases of coronavirus were confirmed in the UK on Thursday, in addition to 86 people who died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19.
As of 9am on Thursday, the government said there were another 30,215 laboratory-confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the UK.
The government also announced the latest changes to England’s green, amber and red travel lists.
The new rules will go into effect at 4 a.m. on Sunday (August 8).
The Ministry of Transport announced that four countries will be added to the amber list for travel, while 11 countries will be moved to the green or red list.
Anyone returning from Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia, Latvia, Romania and Norway will not need to be quarantined upon arrival.
France will also lose its confusing “Amber +” status which means that all travelers, not just those not fully vaccinated, have to self-isolate for 10 days upon their return.
On Wednesday, it was also announced the launch of a vaccination program for children aged 16-17.
The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI) has advised that children aged 16-17 should be offered the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine – the only Covid-19 vaccine approved for use in people over 12 years of age in the UK.
Ministers across the UK have agreed to the recommendation and the NHS is making preparations to start giving the first doses in the coming weeks.
