Yury Plebson, director of the 4th European Department of the Moscow Ministry, believes that NATO exercises pose a threat to security in the region between Russia and Ukraine. Speaking to RIA Novosti on Thursday, Mr. Pelibson said: “Unfortunately, we have to admit that the Black Sea is turning from an area of peace and good-neighbourliness to a dangerous military confrontation area.
“It is quite clear that this type of ‘training’ provokes, rather than prevents, conflict situations.”
The diplomat also told the state-owned news agency that Russia would continue to take steps to protect its national security.
“We have repeatedly warned that the escalation of the military-political conflict directly on our borders carries with it the charge of confrontation,” he said.
Between June 28 and July 10, NATO conducted the so-called Sea Breeze 2021 exercise.
This saw as many as 5,000 sailors, 40 warplanes, and 32 ships sail in the Black Sea.
Sailors from Ukraine joined NATO’s naval fleets.
Less than a week ago, Russian forces blocked the movements of the British ship HMS Defender after it entered waters around Crimea on June 23.
While the Defense Ministry press office initially said “no shots were directed at the HMS Defender,” RIA Novosti claims the shots were fired after the Russians issued “repeated warnings” to the British ship.

The Ukrainian Navy will accompany ships of another country, including those from the United States.
According to a local report, Pelibson issued another statement today in favor of a “gradual expansion” of military cooperation between Moscow and Ankara.
“We note with satisfaction the gradual expansion of the Russian-Turkish partnership on a wide range of issues of common interest,” the Russian diplomat said.
Defense cooperation is no exception.
“We appreciate the position of our Turkish partners who act in accordance with national tasks to ensure defensive capability despite frank external pressure.”
Turkey is a member of NATO, having joined the alliance in 1952.
