Scarlett Johansson may not look or act like she’s crazy, but she’s now considered one in certain areas of Hollywood.
“The lunatics took charge of the asylum,” a senior studio executive in 1919 when he discovered that the three leading movie stars of the day—Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks—were told, along with great director D.W. Griffith. They founded their own separate company, United Artists. They were determined to keep the profits from their films. They were “gifted,” after all, and were deeply suspicious that Hollywood moguls were trying to get them to sign highly restrictive contracts that would limit their artistic freedoms and their salaries.
Chaplin, Beckford and colleagues issued a high-profile statement pledging to protect the public from “groups of threat and trust that might impose upon them modest production and automated entertainment.”
