London 2012 bronze medalists had to dig deep to return home from Tokyo with a bronze medal

Great Britain’s women won the bronze medal at Oi Hockey Stadium after beating India 4-3 in a thrilling showdown at the Tokyo Olympics.

Although the Rio 2016 champions relinquished their title after a crushing semi-final loss to the Netherlands on Wednesday, they deepened and took a third consecutive place on the podium.

The London 2012 bronze medalists had to dig deep, taking a 2-0 lead and then falling behind before winning it in the final quarter from a Grace Palson penalty.

Eli Raer opened the scoring, then Sarah Robertson netted 2-0, only for India to score three times in four minutes during a frenetic second quarter, with Georgette Kaur scoring twice and Vandana Kataria also scoring.

Captain Holly Burne Webb leveled in the third quarter before Britain showed their composure to come back to the front and clinch a stunning win that sparked scenes of raucous celebration.

After a goalless first quarter, Britain needed less than a minute of the second quarter to merit the lead.

Raer let the Indian defense falter with a strong run, and got the goal, despite her cross pass veering badly past the India goalkeeper.

Ansley then hit the post as Britain continued to sway, and they went 2-0 up after a great turn and Robertson fired home.

I am so proud of this exciting effort the women of GBHockey put against the amazing team of TheHockeyIndia. What a bronze medal! Three Olympic medals in a row… Haters will hate it, but the results speak for themselves. Well done players and staff x

And goalkeeper Maddy Hinch responded to a sharp reaction in the wake of a rare attack for India, but the difference then narrowed after Cor’s penalty kick, before this achievement was repeated two minutes later, to make the score 2-2.

It is noteworthy that India added the third goal in four minutes through Katira. He went to a video referral before he was allowed to stand, and suddenly Britain had a big fight on their hands, trailing 3-2 in the first half.

Britain needed to regroup after such a disappointing end to the second quarter, and they responded admirably, creating a solid podium before Burne Webb fired a powerful shot into the corner of India’s net.

Two more penalty kicks put the Olympic champion under pressure, though, and Hinch saved well as the thrilling showdown continued at a pace that undermined stamina, and tied 3-3 as entering the final quarter.

The British team had to keep their cool in the face of the ripple of the medal match

Balsdown then struck, Britain held its own, and India could not find a way back as the bronze was secured after an epic showdown.

This bronze was the nation’s 52nd medal in Tokyo, meaning Team GB is now over the 51st they won in Beijing 2008.

“I’m so proud of this team. We have 16 here who are going to get a medal, our reserves and those who have come home, and we’ve really counted on everyone on this team,” Bernie Webb.

“I hope every single one of them can get a medal, that’s why we’re here, that’s why we achieved it.

“It’s been a tough five years. Really, really tough. We’re all still here because we all had a little bit of faith in a deep, deep one.

Captain Holly Bernie Webb described the pride she felt for each member of the team

“There have been times over the years when we doubted we could achieve this, I am so happy and proud of everyone we have.

“After winning and making the biggest dream come true, that in itself is the biggest challenge. To bring a group of girls who just saw it, there were many challenges along the way.

“This is collectively as a team and as individuals as well.

“I’m so proud of all the girls, the whole team, and every support team that took part.”
