First thing: Evidence that Gulfstream is at risk of collapse | US news

[ad_1]

good morning.

Climate scientists have discovered warning signs that the Gulf Stream may collapse, one of the planet’s most likely tipping points in the climate crisis.

The researchers found a “near-total loss of stability over the past century” for the currents, which are already at their slowest point in at least 1,600 years, but the new analysis shows they may be on the verge of shutting down.

“Really showing signs of instability is something I didn’t expect and find frightening,” said Niclas Boers, of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, who conducted the research. “It’s something you can’t do [allow to] is happening.”

Such an event will have disastrous consequences around the world, and will:

The rains on which billions of people depend for food in India, South America and West Africa are severely disrupted.

Increasing storms and lowering temperatures in Europe, raising sea levels in eastern North America.

The Amazon rainforest and Antarctic ice sheets are at risk.
