It is reported that Lionel Messi is now being looked at by Chelsea with Blues owner Roman Abramovich who is said to have “requested an urgent meeting” with the Argentine representatives.

Barcelona gave, on Thursday evening, a shocking confirmation that Messi, 34, will leave the club after 21 years, after failing to renew his contract due to financial regulations in Spain.

Messi is now a free agent

This means that arguably the greatest player of all time is a free agent, with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain being the obvious suitors.

Both clubs are owned by Middle Eastern countries, and both clubs can present Messi trophies and familiar faces.

However, PSG may not be able to meet his salary requirements, and City have just spent £100m on Jack Grealish, while also pursuing Harry Kane.

Abramovich is fond of making marquee autographs

According to AS in Spain, Russian billionaire Abramovich “set his eyes” on Messi and “requested an urgent meeting” with his team.

The Blues are known to be in the market for a new striker with Erling Haaland a major target at the start of the summer.

With Haaland set to stay at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea are now understood to have shifted their focus to Inter’s Romelu Lukaku.

However, the surprising news about Messi’s sudden presence is said to have opened up another option.

Lukaku has 64 goals in 95 games for Inter Milan

The report claims that Chelsea are continuing negotiations with Lukaku while exploring the possibility of signing Messi.

Paris Saint-Germain is believed to be the favorite, but other reports have suggested a move to France is “almost impossible” due to high taxes and the club’s need to cut its salary bill.

It has been speculated that Messi might favor a move to City, who have just broken the British transfer record by signing Jack Grealish for £100m, with the legendary striker possibly linking up with ex-Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola.

If that is the case, Abramovich will hope to convince him otherwise.
