The mother of a terrorist killed by police after a stabbing attack in south London immediately described “knowing” her son was responsible when she heard about the attack, shortly after their last conversation.

Halima Khan said her son Sudesh Amman signed their phone conversation with “Goodbye, I love you, Mom” before he went on to steal a kitchen knife from a store and unintentionally stab two people in the crowd on Sunday afternoon in Streatham in February 2020.

He was shot dead by armed police within 62 seconds of launching his attack, in which his victim escaped.

Khan told the investigation into Amman’s death that she “didn’t know” her son would be beaten.

Khan, speaking through a Tamil interpreter, said she was on the phone with her husband on 2 February when an alert came from a news site about the Streatham incident.

She said, “I was afraid.” “Then I noticed the jacket and the shoes on the news, and it was given to him.”

In her testimony, she said: “I saw that someone was shot dead in Streatham at 2pm.

“I knew it was Sudesh. I saw on a website that the dead man was wearing it [his brother’s] jacket and his shoes.

“Then I called the controller because I wanted to tell them the jacket and the shoes were Sudesh.

I called my husband and told him. We had been calling Sudesh for a long time.”

I told Jonathan Hough QC, the investigative attorney, and then she started to cry. “I was shocked,” she said. I kept crying.

“All my children were running up to me and asking me why I was crying.”

“Was there any explanation for what he did and what prompted him?” Hogg said.

“No, I didn’t think he would do these things and I had no idea,” Khan replied.

Khan told police that she spoke to her son shortly after 1:30 p.m. on the day of the attack, when he said he was on his way to buy some food.

The investigation had already heard that Amman had left his test inn at 1.22pm on his way to Streatham High Road where he would carry out his attack while wearing a fake suicide device.

Remembering the conversation, she told the police: “Sudesh said he loves me. He said, ‘Goodbye, I love you, Mom. He said this before. That was the last time I spoke to Sudesh.'”

The day before, during a phone conversation about a recent family bereavement, Amman appears to have told Khan: “Everyone [is] He will die someday.”

Oman is the eldest of six siblings and was expelled from school for misconduct. He grew up in Coventry and Birmingham before moving to Harrow, northwest London.

The investigation previously heard how Oman was considered “one of the most dangerous individuals” investigated by police and MI5 teams, and that an officer feared the attack was “when rather than if” during discussions two weeks before his release.

He was automatically released from Belmarsh Prison on January 23, 2020, in part through a 40-month prison sentence for obtaining and disseminating terrorist material.

This was despite police pleas to the governor of Belmarsh to detain Oman for a longer period after intelligence indicated that he maintains an extremist mindset, and wants to carry out a knife attack in the future.

He was also said to be linked in prison with a number of extremists, including Hashem Abedi, who conspired with his brother Salman in a suicide attack at the Manchester Arena in 2017, and previously expressed regret that he was not involved in the murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby. Outside Woolwich Barracks in 2013.

He heard the investigation, as he told the others that he wanted to kill the Queen.

Oman, who is of Sri Lankan descent, spent 10 days living in a bail inn in Streatham, during which time the secret police teams monitoring him noticed his “disturbing” behavior.

Oman was seen by the secret police buying four bottles of Air Pro, kitchen chips and parcel tape from Poundland on January 31, items used to make a fake “raw” explosive belt.

But they said there was not enough evidence to arrest him and they feared a search of his room would blow their cover.

The investigation is ongoing.
