Britain’s air force says RAF fighters scrambled to intercept Russian military aircraft flying near UK airspace in the “Cold War era”.
Rapid reaction cyclones have been launched from the Royal Air Force of Louisemouth, northern Scotland, after Russian aircraft were spotted over the North Sea.
They intercepted two TU-142 “Bear-F” naval reconnaissance aircraft and an anti-submarine warfare aircraft – described by the RAF as a “Cold War era”.

The planes were tracked by NATO as they passed through the Military Alliance’s Northern Air Police District.
In a statement, an RAF Typhoon pilot in Lossiemouth said: “We have worked closely with units from across the RAF to successfully intercept another successful intercept, and to maintain the integrity of UK and NATO airspace throughout.
“We were initially informed by our NATO colleagues and then directed directly to the bears by the RAF Control and Reporting Centre.
“Air-to-air refueling from an RAF Voyager aircraft confirmed that we were able to remain on the mission until the mission was completed, and the aircraft departed from the UK’s area of interest.”

The RAF added that the entry of Russian military aircraft into the area of international airspace under the control of the United Kingdom could pose a risk to other users.
She added that Russian planes often don’t talk to air traffic control or “scream” — they broadcast a code to ensure they are visible to aircraft users and other observers on the ground.
