Marvel star Gemma Chan addresses the controversial Sherlock episode

Marvel star Gemma Chan touched on a controversial BBC Sherlock episode she starred in in 2010.

The actress, who has appeared in Captain Marvel and will star in the Eternals, was in the second episode of the Sherlock series.

Titled “The Blind Banker,” it focused on a Chinese smuggling gang based in London’s Chinatown that used ancient codes to plot and hide their crimes. Chan’s character, Su Lin Yao, was killed by her brother by the end of the episode.

In an extended interview with Vogue, Chan looked back at the role — and the other parts she played early in her career — and said, “Would I necessarily make the same choices now, if given the choice? Probably not.”

“I think I’d speak more if I felt there was a role leaning on an orientalist trope of some sort. I’m a lot more self-aware. And I think I’m in more of a position where I can say something. At the time, I say, I wasn’t angry—I was just, as a woman from the Southeast Asia, sad because it was one of the few Asian roles I saw for women on British TV.

“With all due respect to everyone involved…I’m not here to cast a shadow on anyone…But yes, I totally hear what you’re saying. I don’t look down on anyone doing any position or any job on set. The industry has transformed. Already, even while I was working in it. Changing the actual culture – changing the practice – takes longer.”

Gemma recently launched a charity to fight hate crimes against Asia and sadly revealed that she is really starting to worry about her family, following reports that hate crimes against people in East and Southeast Asia (ESEA) have risen sharply since the start of the pandemic.

The Eternals is slated to release on November 5.
