Lukaku, Abraham, Conde – Chelsea’s latest summer transfer case

Chelsea appear to be close to signing Romelu Lukaku as Thomas Tuchel appears set to acquire the outstanding striker they have been keen to secure all summer.

There are expectations on both sides that the move, which is likely to be a Premier League record, will be implemented sooner rather than later. Tuchel would like the Belgian striker to be in the capital before the start of the season on August 14.

After a quiet start to a transfer window that has focused mainly on expenses so far for the Blues, Marina Granovskaya has begun work to secure the signing of Lukaku, who is expected to cost more than Jack Grealish’s move to Man City announced on Thursday.

It is set to be a busy few days for Chelsea before the start of the new season, with decisions being made about expenses as well as income.

Tuchel revealed to football.london midweek that he had 42 players at Cobham on Monday to train, including all of his first team players as well as those who returned from loan spells last season and a talented group of youngsters.

There were two realistic attacking options for Chelsea this summer, Lukaku and Erling Haaland. If the club gets a Lukaku deal across the line, any potential Haaland move on the road could be dead in the water.

Once Lukaku’s transfer is over (hopefully), Chelsea will turn their attention to signing Jules Kounde, the French central defender in Seville.

Tuchel has a lot of decisions to make about the players in the coming days as the pre-season comes to an end.

Tuchel had 42 players in the Cobham training complex on Monday, a very bloated squad that is expected to be downsized.

The aforementioned drinking water and Barkley are on the chopping block, as are Timoe Bakayoko, Baba Rahman, Batshuayi and, according to reports, Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Tammy Abraham’s name is also in the mix of Rahel, which will likely be more focused if Chelsea sign Lukaku.

Atalanta is believed to be keen on the Chelsea striker as the round of play continues. If Chelsea sign Lukaku, Inter would need a replacement, believed to be Atalanta’s Duvan Zapata. After that, Atalanta will need a replacement and it is believed that they targeted Ibrahim.

West Ham and Southampton are credited with caring for Abraham, but if the move occurred, Chelsea would likely prefer it to be permanent. Time will tell.
