UK weather: Thunderstorms cause heavy rain and flood risks for parts of the country | UK news

Thunderstorms may bring lightning, hail and torrential rain to parts of the UK this weekend, after a gray and humid start to August.

The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for Northern Ireland, northern Wales, northern England and even central Scotland until midnight Saturday, with the heavy rain potentially causing travel disruption and flooding in a few places.

Meteorologists said some areas could see 20-30 mm of rain over an hour on Saturday after 40 to 60 mm of rain fell in parts on Friday.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: “The reason for this is the low pressure responsible for the UK’s weather at the moment – it’s a very slow-moving area with low pressure, so it’s not moving fast.

“It leads to the heavy rain and thunderstorms I saw during Friday, and we saw flooding in some places as well.

“This will continue over the weekend, especially across the northern half of the UK where the rain will be slow moving compared to the southern regions, where it’s a bit windier.”

While there will be sunny periods between showers, temperatures are set to be on the cooler side for this time of year, and are expected to be in the high teens to low 20s.

Conditions on Sunday are set to be similar, with more heavy rain expected in the central and northern regions of the UK, more weather warnings expected and temperatures peaking at 21°C to 22°C.

The southern parts of England and Wales will be drier until later in the day, with heavy rain coming into the evening, according to forecasters.

The sun will shine and more heavy rain is expected on Monday but is expected to drop to become drier and brighter on Tuesday.
