Pundit claims Aston Villa learned from Tottenham’s ‘minor’ transfer mistake

Aston Villa may have sold their talisman and captain Jack Grealish to Manchester City this summer, but former England midfielder Danny Mills believes Dean Smith will fare better in the long run.

Grealish signed a six-year contract at the Etihad Stadium, in which he will remain at the club until the summer of 2027 at the earliest, after he became the most expensive British footballer in history.

Villa spent nearly £100m replacing the England international this summer, having bought Emiliano Buendia, Ashley Young, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings ahead of the new Premier League season kicking off next week.

Mills told Football Insider that Villa have spent well this summer replacing their captain.

“On the face of it, Jack Grealish was a superstar, team captain and champion,” Mills said.

“He’s carried them so well the last few seasons and has been fantastic for them.

“What they have now are four or five players who are very capable.

“You lose your star but you get four or five good players. It wasn’t like Tottenham went and hit £90m of Gareth Bale’s money on Tom, Dick and Harry. They bought a lot of junior players who know nothing about English football and that was that As a complete waste.

“While Villa should be commended for all this. They obviously knew Grealish was leaving a long time ago, and they knew he was coming. So, they said, ‘Let’s go replace him before he leaves so we don’t run into the wall.'”

“The players they brought in mean they are in a better position than they were with Grealish just on his own.”

Villa has also been linked with the moves of Todd Cantwell and Axel Tuanzebe, with the transfer window closing on August 31.
