A German coach has been expelled from the Olympics after she was photographed punching a horse for refusing to jump.

Kim Raisner was photographed bending over a fence to hit Saint Boy during the women’s modern pentathlon competition.

German sprinter Annika Schleu was struggling to control the horse ahead of the showjumping round at the Tokyo Olympics on Friday.

Television footage showed the animal refusing to jump the fences, which cost the German athlete a chance to win the gold medal.

Athletes are given 20 minutes to contact an unfamiliar horse before the round.

Shilio, who was leading the field, was crying when she entered the ring.

The International Federation of Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) said it reviewed footage showing the trainer hitting the horse with her fist.

In a statement, she said: “The EB Executive Board gave Germany coach Kim Reisner a black card, which led to her exclusion from the rest of the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.

EB reviewed video footage that showed Ms Raisner hitting Saint Boy, ridden by Annika Schleu, with her fist during the riding system of the Women’s Modern Pentathlon competition.

Her actions were deemed to contravene the rules of the UIPM competition, which apply to all recognized modern pentathlon competitions including the Olympics.

“EB’s decision was made today at Tokyo Stadium ahead of the resumption of the men’s modern pentathlon.”

Its suspension applies to the rest of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, which end on Sunday.

It was not clear if she was supposed to have any role in the men’s competition in the modern pentathlon on Saturday.

The coach is a former modern pentathlon who participated in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
