According to the survey, Sturgeon currently has an approval rating of 53 percent.
The survey confirms ministers’ views that sport can be a factor in helping to hold the union together. Among those who were watching the Tokyo Olympics, 91 percent said they supported the GB team, while 59 percent of respondents said they supported England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in competing as the GB team at the Olympics.
Nearly half (49 per cent) of the 1,000 Scottish respondents said they would support the UK and Ireland jointly hosting the 2030 soccer World Cup – a move the government hopes will dampen the independence drive.
More than one in three participants (38 per cent) agree that a World Cup between the UK and Ireland would help strengthen the union.
But in a less consistent result, 66 per cent of Scots said they were more inclined to support England’s opponents at sporting events.
Among those who watched the Euro 2020 final, a majority of 59 per cent backed Italy over England.
