British and Irish Lions captain Alon Wayne Jones fought with his emotions after his team suffered a dramatic 19-16 defeat by South Africa in the crucial Test, as the hosts sealed the series 2-1.
Morne Stein came off the bench to break Lions’ hearts for the second time with a late penalty kick in Cape Town.
In a cruel twist of fate, the 37-year-old sealed the fate of the 2009 Lions when he fired another late penalty giving South Africa an irreplaceable 2-0 lead after winning 28-25 in the second Test.
This time around, the Lions produced the series’ best rugby game in the first half, lit up discharge, rhythm and ambition and entered the second half 10-6, but lost their momentum in the second half as the Springboks piled on pressure.
“Obviously he was very disappointed with the result but I think the quest and the transformation have been in place since last week,” Jones told Sky Sports.
“We were in it to death. I’m very proud of the group, very aware of what we stand for but very disappointed. We wanted to go out in the second half with more of the same.
“We probably did that after the early exchanges, and then closeness and kicks broke the match.
“Maybe it was similar to what we’ve seen in the corrections in previous games, we wanted to start but couldn’t do it.”
Despite this, Jones felt Lions could still be proud of their efforts in what was a test tour.
“Just being short on two calls is disappointing,” he said.
After completing his fourth tour of the Lions, the Welshman, who was fighting his emotions, did not want to indulge in whether or not it would be his last time in the red jersey.
“This, in particular, I had to put in more effort the second time around to get out here,” he said. “I know a lot of these guys will be here the next day, so I look forward to watching them.”
