One of the most historical gambling in sports: the defining moments of an Olympics like no other | world News

Tokyo 2020 was one of the most historical gambling in sports. The largest global gathering during the pandemic was a step into the unknown and controversial to the end.

Our sports reporter Tom Parmenter picks 10 moments in Tokyo that will go down in Olympic history.

Magical Monday

When Adam Petty started his “Magic Monday” medal race for Team GB, it was contagious.

Within a few hours of winning the 100m breaststroke, Tom Daly and Matty Lee took the gold in diving and Tom Bidcock won the men’s mountain bike cross-country race.

The GB team was up and running, but it was Betty’s colleagues who really got to work. The swimmers gave the best British performance ever in the pool at the Olympics.

Laura and Jason Kinney

Four women came to these Olympics knowing that they had a chance to win three consecutive gold medals in back-to-back games.

Jade Jones crashed from taekwondo in the first round, Helen Glover came in a painful fourth in rowing, and Charlotte Dujardins won two bronze medals in the equestrian competition.

At Iso Velodrome, Laura Kenny won the silver in her first race and then – in a great tactical tournament with Katie Archibald – won the Madison Prize for making history.

It was her golden hat. She drew herself up with Dujardin as Britain’s most decorated female Olympian.

Then, on the last day of these games, Jason Kinney pulled out one last major stake in Keren. He broke away from the pack early to break into his home to become the decorated GB Olympian of all time.

Both Keynes have 15 Olympic medals – 12 of them gold.

BMX hack

The Tokyo Games will be remembered for the way new sports have truly captured the imagination and younger audiences to the Games.

The British racers dominated the BMX—the spring race was owned by Bethany Shriever of Essex, who won the gold and immediately passed into the arms of teammate Kye Whyte, who had just won the silver medal in the men’s competition.

At the new BMX Freestyle event, Charlotte Worthington of Manchester performed a 360-degree backflip that had never been done before in such a big competition. Bronze medalist Declan Brooks received a hero’s welcome, with hundreds lining the streets on his return to Portsmouth.

One of the most exciting sports in gaming has made huge progress.

Sky Brown

Whenever I see GB’s youngest Summer Olympian in Tokyo, Sky Brown is always smiling. At the age of 13 years and 28 days, she entered the history books by winning a bronze medal at the women’s skate park.

Having grown up in Japan, you could easily have represented the host country that dominated skateboard competitions. In the final, she fell twice and took one last round to pull off tricks that would put her on the podium.

In the scorching Tokyo heat, she kept her cool and just went — fearless, just fun — and on her last run she dumped her and put on the biggest smile of the Olympics.

Britain’s youngest-ever medal winner said she would like to compete in both skateboarding and surfing at the 2024 Paris Games.

Queen

The Olympic Games always open up new horizons.

This time among the history makers was a Canadian soccer player named Quinn, who became the first transgender athlete to compete in the Games and the first to become an Olympic champion.

The quarterback went on with their team to win the women’s soccer gold medal. “Olympic champions,” Quinn then wrote on Instagram, adding, “Did that just happen?!?”

Weight lifting

Before the weightlifting competition, all the talk was about a transgender athlete at the Olympics: New Zealand’s Laurel Hubbard.

When she failed to do a clean lift and was knocked out of the competition, Nottingham’s Emily Campbell was just on her way. She power through her lifts and cries of joy as she lifted 161kg reverberated throughout the ring. She won the silver medal – the first British woman to win a weightlifting medal.

She then said that she wanted to prove to people that plus-size women can do anything.

With no lottery funding, she also had to rely on the generosity of Nottingham’s Bulwell residents – including the local cobbler who she offered to fix her training shoes for free and the grocer who gave her fruit and veggies for free.

Tom Daly

Over the twenty years that Tom Daly was engaged in diving, he longed for the title of “Olympic champion”. At the age of 28, he finally achieved it – he won the gold medal in synchronous diving with Mattie Lee.

At the start of the COVID lockdown, Dali took up knitting and was regularly seen with his needles and wool by the pool in Tokyo. His coach said she believes this was a big factor in helping him focus on diving and eventually achieving his dream.

“I feel very proud to say that I am a gay man and an Olympic champion as well,” Daly said.

Simone Biles

The greatest gymnast of all time made one of the games’ greatest talking points and taught everyone about “twists” – a problem in which a gymnast simply doesn’t feel like he believes in his ability to pull swings or twists that win medals.

By withdrawing from nearly all of her competitions to give herself space, Simone Biles has made a big call. Secretly I went to the gym on the outskirts of Tokyo and went back to basics. When she returned to only one final event – the balance beam final – the games seemed to pause as everyone watched to see what would happen.

Simone Biles is back and the fact that she took bronze in one of the most athletic returns we’ve seen will live long in the memory.

mix it up

Why did it take so long to incorporate the great mixed relay events into the Olympics? Tactics, drama and sheer excitement made mixed swimming, sprinting and triathlon a real hit.

Seeing women compete head-to-head with men and vice versa was the missing ingredient in the games and they are definitely here to stay. It also gave Johnny Brownlee a final crack at Olympic gold after he finished fifth in the individual competition.

With Georgia Taylor Brown, Jess Learmonth and Alex Yee, the British quartet scored gold – and Johnny Brownlee could finally say: “The Olympics…have it done.”

Empty places

The Games will forever be remembered as the empty Olympiad held despite the pandemic. Despite the organizers doing their best with the technology, it simply wasn’t the same either in venues or watching at home.

There were protests throughout the games among locals who wanted the games to be canceled and infection rates in Tokyo rose to new highs.

There were also a lot of Japanese fans who came out to support the events that passed along the public roads.

The discussion about the games’ direct impact on the pandemic is still ongoing, but they completed the program roughly as scheduled – which many critics doubted ever happened.

It will be several more weeks before anyone can definitively determine the impact the games have had.
