Chef de Mission praised the GB athletes for their accomplishments in a “more complex, challenging and challenging environment”; Team GB finished fourth in the Tokyo 2020 medal table with 22 gold, 21 silver and 22 bronze Olympic medals.

Jason Kinney and boxer Lauren Price ensured that the GB team finished the last day of the Olympics with two more golds.

GPD Mission England boss hailed the “greatest achievement in British Olympic history” after last-day medals by Jason Kinney and Lauren Price took the team’s tally to 65 at the Tokyo Olympics.

The total number of medals earned at the GB Team Olympics in London in 2012 matched and is only two times lower than the total for Rio 2016, breaking the lower target of 51 medals from Beijing in 2008.

“After Beijing, we had no idea that British athletes would win 65 medals in London,” England said.

“We knew we were in good shape for Rio but it hadn’t been done before, matching and then exceeding the medal count in London.

“I just think to finish these games with two gold medals, and to have this team deliver 65 medals is very exceptional.

“The team not only made history, but it also made history against the backdrop of the most complex, most challenging and challenging environment that we will surely encounter in my life.

“It was against all odds and I think it’s the greatest achievement in British Olympic history. It was the miracle of Tokyo and it was great to be here.”

Along with a number of record-breakers including Laura, Jason Kinney and Charlotte Dujardin, England have paid special tribute to those who have risen to the occasion to snatch bronze medals, and believe this bodes particularly well for Paris in three years’ time.

England added: “In Rio, we made big returns with medals on some days and on another day we could only have a medal or two.”

But the pages of this team’s Bryony, who won another bronze after her silver in Rio, and the women’s artistic gymnastics team winning a bronze with their 16-year-old twins — kept the scoreboard off and gave everyone confidence that the team is in great shape.

“We had 16 fourth places. This is a very young and very talented team, and I am absolutely confident that they will go to Paris in less than three years and do very well.”

Boris Johnson, UK Prime Minister, has taken to social media to praise the GB team’s performance at the Games.

He said: “In the past two weeks, the GB team has shown us the best of this country – a testament to our sportsmanship, hard work and determination.

“From record-breaking performances in the pool to gravity-defying runs in skateboarding and BMX, this team has demonstrated exceptional depth and breadth of talent.

“I would like to thank each and every one of the Olympians and everyone behind the scenes whose hours of coaching and training have been instrumental in our success.

“This team has shown that even in the most difficult of circumstances, sport brings people together and changes lives. You have shown grace in victory and incredible courage in defeat.”
