Weekly Covid cases are rising for the first time since Freedom Day after a period of declining infections, leading experts to say Britain has passed the peak of the third wave.

Today, more than 27,000 new cases of Covid were announced

UK coronavirus cases rose by more than 27,000 today as the seven-day average of infections rose for the first time since Freedom Day.

Another 27,429 cases were recorded today, up from 24,470 last Sunday.

The seven-day average of new infections is now 191,019, which is a 1.9% increase from the previous figure.

Meanwhile, the UK death toll rose by 39 today – well below the 65 deaths recorded last Sunday.

However, the seven-day average for Covid deaths in the country is still nearly 15% high, with 601 deaths in the past seven days.

The latest rise in weekly infections comes after England saw an increase in cases in mid-July after Euro 2020.

However, experts were baffled when that rise suddenly stopped and numbers began to fall, with the number of new daily cases halving from July 17 to August 2.

It sparked a wave of optimism as a Conservative minister said the UK could have passed the peak of its third wave.

Minister Jillian Keegan said the situation looked “very, very promising”.

She told LBC: “We’re all looking at the data with hope but we’ve seen how this virus can mutate at several points.

“Obviously we get a lot of duplicators. And the more duplexes we get, which is why we get this August 16 date to say, ‘Everyone got vaccinated.’ Of course that gives young people the chance to get a double shot as well.

“It looks very promising.”

The UK has now fully vaccinated more than 39 million people, which is 75% of the adult population.

Although a senior minister previously said the UK has effectively reached herd immunity from the coronavirus, experts say the country is still very far or may never get there.

The more contagious delta variant has raised the herd immunity threshold and some experts believe as many as 98 per cent of Britons will need to be vaccinated for that to happen.

Others have estimated that 70-90% of the population needs protection in order to achieve herd immunity.

Yesterday it was revealed that the government has put in place ‘contingency plans’ for further lockdown in case the NHS is bypassed.

The majority of Covid restrictions in England were lifted on July 19 – which some have called ‘Freedom Day’.

But it has now emerged that social distancing rules can be strengthened during the winter if doctors and nurses are put under pressure.

A source told i that ministers and experts are still confident that the deployment of the vaccine has broken the back of the epidemic.

But they said Boris Johnson had authorized planning to shut down a “fire”, should the situation worsen.

It is believed that the staffing crisis within the NHS and the emergence of other diseases – previously overcome due to Covid restrictions – could hamper the health service, along with the potential rise of a strain outweighing the vaccine.

But a government adviser told the outlets: “If further closures are necessary, the plan is to limit it to short, preferably during the school holidays in late October and Christmas.

“Firebreaks instead of lasting months at a time.”

Number 10 confirmed the contingency plans in place and did not rule out the possibility of further closures.
