Lima, August 8 (EFE). An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale shook the central coast of Peru on Sunday, with no personal or material damage reported, the Peru Geophysical Institute (IGP) reported.

The earthquake occurred at 10.41 local time (15.41 GMT) and had its epicenter 111 kilometers southwest of the city of Ica, the capital of the region of the same name, located 300 kilometers from Lima.

Telluric movement arose at a depth of 38 kilometers from the surface, so the inhabitants of Ica felt it with a force of 3 on the Mercalli scale, which specialists considered “moderate”.

According to the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation of the Peruvian Navy, the seismic event did not generate any warning of a tsunami on the Peruvian coast.

The Ica region was hardest hit by the last major earthquake in the South American country, which occurred in 2007 with nearly 600 deaths.

Peru is located in an area called the Pacific Ring of Fire, where approximately 85 percent of the world’s seismic activity is recorded.
