The ancient stone monument has attracted people to it for centuries. His first copy was a massive ring of Welsh blue stones, laid 5,000 years ago. Fifty-six holes around the edge of the monument mark the sites where the Blue Stones once stood.
It was discovered in the 17th century by John Aubrey, a pioneering natural philosopher, writer, and archaeologist.
The holes were duly called “Aubrey’s Holes”.
At some point, Stone Age restorers moved the blue stones, but left the materials underneath as is.
This included half a million pieces of bone, which were explored during the Smithsonian Channel’s documentary, Mysterious Britain: The Secrets of Stonehenge.
Long after the Opry era, in the 1920s, bones were found in several holes by archaeologist William Hawley.
However, as the documentary’s narrator noted: “Hawley’s approach to preserving a site for historical purity differs little from today – he actually reconstructed part of Stonehenge using non-Stone Age techniques.”
Following the same “accidental approach” to archaeology, Hawley dumped all the bones from the various Aubrey holes into one large hole when he and his team had finished their work.

Ms Willis said: ‘It has been a lot of work.
“We have, based on Holly’s excavation notes, about 60 people buried in the Aubrey pits.
“My job was to try to isolate these individuals.
“I was able to isolate 26: I was able to find 21 adults and five children, so we have a fetus, an infant, a toddler, an older child and a teen.”
The complete bone fragments date back to about 3000 BC to 2500 BC.
Most of the burnt bones were found under where the original blue stones stood.
After radiocarbon dating, researchers discovered that people were buried at the same time as the Stone Age Britons were building the original blue circle.
Ms Willis said the area would once have been used as a cremation cemetery, with the blue stones serving as markers for a “dedicated dead” place.
