England captain Joe Root thinks the only winner was the weather after it rained on the last day of the first Test against India at Trent Bridge.

What promised to be an intriguing ending with India’s 209 chasing for victory after a century of rooting that kept England in the match ended up losing.

And while India could be said to have a slight advantage needing 157 throws with nine wickets on hand to lead 1-0 in the five Test series, Root thinks anything could have happened.

“The weather has robbed us of what could have been a very enjoyable last day,” he said.

“I would have been lying if I hadn’t said India was in the driving seat going today but on a small gate like that, you get a couple in a group and the game can be turned upside down.

“At one point we had a potential 40-plus chance which would have resulted in a delicious end to what was a great test to play a game in.

“We thought we could have pushed to win today, it’s a shame the weather won today.”

Of the 486 rounds England made in the match, Root managed 173 of them with his display carrying a shaky top arrangement with the side also spilling a number of catches.

Although the England captain knows his side must improve, he feels there are signs of improvement as the test progresses.

“I think we advanced in the game, after the first rounds we were a lot below par, but that being said, I still think we played really well,” Root added.

“There were some glimpses of what we are capable of by hitting the second innings and we played with better intentions.

“Obviously we want to score more points at the top of the standings, we want to take every opportunity that we create and make our lives a little easier.

“We know there are things to work on and there are areas that we need to improve and we need to make big first rounds.

“But we are able to do that and it’s the big partnerships that we didn’t quite get in the second rounds but I think you saw a better rhythm and hopefully we can move on to the second test.”

Injuries and Covid restrictions have not helped England find a stable squad with Jofra Archer ruled out for the rest of the year on a special strike.

About Archer’s absence, Root said: “I’m totally devastated by Jofra (Archer) – he’s come for some harsh criticism that I think is unwarranted.

“Obviously he had a serious injury and I really hope he can get back in shape and healthy again soon.

“At times he seemed to be playing with a lot of pain and I hope he can get through a difficult rehab and show everyone what a great player he is because he will be a serious player for England across the board, there is no doubt about him.

“When he’s fit and at his best, he’ll win a lot of test matches going forward.”
