British firefighters prepare to fight the end of the world fires on the Greek island of Evia

Teams from the UK have had to deal with bushfires at home, such as those at Saddleworth Moor in Greater Manchester and Winter Hill in Lancashire in 2018, but are also available to fly at short notice to other countries.

“More and more staff are being trained in the UK to deal with bushfires,” said Brown, of Merseyside Fire & Rescue, who has been a firefighter for 26 years. “It is a developing ability.”

The British team is likely to spend at least a week in Greece. “It will depend on our fatigue levels and how effective we are after five or six days,” he said.

The British unit will support 575 Greek firefighters who were battling the Evia fires. Greece is also being helped by firefighters and equipment sent by Romania, France, Spain, Switzerland and Ukraine.

“We have another difficult evening, another difficult night,” said Nikos Hardalias, deputy civil protection minister, on Sunday.

“In Evia we have two great fronts of fire, one in the north and one in the south. One in the north is driven by gusts of wind to the beach settlements.”
