Today’s jury is set to choose the sexual assault trial of disgraced R&B singer R Kelly.
The 54-year-old is expected to stand trial in Brooklyn federal court, New York, on charges of extortion, sexual assault and bribery – all of which he denies.
Prosecutors allege that the I Believe I Can Fly singer ran a criminal scheme in which women and underage girls were recruited to engage in sexual activity with him.
They also allege that Kelly, who is being held in a federal prison in Brooklyn, bribed an Illinois official in 1994 to obtain a false identity for then-15-year-old singer Alia so that they could marry.
Alia is best known for songs like I’m So into You and Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number, the latter of which Kelly served as executive producer. She died in a plane crash in 2001 at the age of 22.
Once jury selection for the New York trial is complete, testimony is scheduled to begin August 18.
Kelly, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, also faces separate criminal charges related to sex in Illinois and Minnesota.
