Drivers urged to reserve MOTs as September demand surge approaches | Leadership

Owners of cars scheduled for next month are being urged to book early due to increased demand.

The MOT exemption introduced after the coronavirus outbreak has increased the number of vehicles that must pass the test in September to stay on the road.

Cars, motorcycles and light trucks that were due to take place between 30 March and 31 July 2020 in Britain have been extended by six months due to the nationwide lockdown. Drivers in Northern Ireland have been given a 12-month extension.

About 20% of 14,688 UK motorists surveyed by the AA said they had benefited from the policy, indicating that more than 5.5 million cars had a delayed MOT test.

Several drivers’ cars were eventually tested in September 2020, which means they must book another test for next month.

They will be competing for slots with owners of 339,000 new cars purchased in September 2018 that are due to be due for the first time.

“With more than 5.5 million vehicles deferred to the MOT, it is imperative that they are tested to ensure they are safe to use,” said Jack Cousins, AA’s Head of Road Policy.

“MOT centers are already feeling the strain and with ‘Big September’ approaching, smart drivers can get ahead in the game. Don’t be late, book today. People usually leave MOT reservations until the last possible moment. Drivers won’t have that luxury this time around.”

Drivers can be fined up to 1,000 for using a vehicle without a valid MOT certificate. Vehicles must earn an MOT on the third anniversary of their registration, and then every 12 months.

A number of parts such as lights, seat belts, tires and brakes are checked to ensure they meet legal standards.
