Harvey Elliott sent Liverpool fans crazy over his bid against Athletic Bilbao as Jurgen Klopp declared his ‘new midfielder’.
Elliott has signed a new long-term contract with the Reds after returning from a productive loan spell at Rovers and has set his sights on working his way into Klopp’s first-team plans.
Ten clubs have made inquiries about the 18-year-old’s loan, but he looks set to stay at Anfield and challenge for a place on the side.
Liverpool fans returned to Anfield for the match in which Elliott came close to scoring a great solo goal, but was rejected by the crossbar, and he received a standing ovation as he left the field.
Liverpool have yet to add to their midfield ranks this summer after losing Jenny Wijnaldum, opening the door for Elliott who worked a bit deeper than the one that saw him score eight goals and provide 11 assists for Rovers.
This versatility is what Klopp praised, saying: “It’s clear we have a new midfielder on our squad with Harvey Elliott.
“He can play different positions, there is absolutely no doubt about that. But in pre-season we wanted to see him in a deeper role just because for a young player you have to learn a lot of things when you are out a little bit and get the ball from time to time. We wanted to share it more.
“And I think he’s taken a big step in this pre-season. If Harvey keeps fit, the world of football can be really excited about that. I liked his performance, loved his performance and his behavior during pre-season.
“So, good for us, good for him.”
