Nicola Sturgeon said she was optimistic the lockdown restrictions would not have to be re-applied in Scotland, but cautioned she could not guarantee anything.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast on Monday morning, she said: “I think any politician, anywhere in the world, in the face of a pandemic of a contagious virus is here and saying ‘I can guarantee something’ is not rational and is really not being forthright with people.
“Every part of my existence is hopeful that the restrictions we lift today in Scotland will never be imposed, and I am optimistic about that? Yes.
“Can I guarantee that? Well, I can tell you that now for an easier interview, but it wouldn’t be the right thing to say because keeping this virus under control depends on all of us continuing to do all the reasonable things you’ve been talking about.
“We also know that this virus has already mutated, and new variants are still the biggest threat to us, so we have to be careful and we have to be realistic.
“But I very much hope that all of that, combined, of course, primarily with the power of vaccination, will mean that we will never again have to face lockdown.”
