A popular blood pressure drug has been withdrawn due to concerns about cancer-causing chemicals

A popular blood pressure drug has been withdrawn due to concerns about cancer-causing chemicals.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a notice for 25 batches of medicinal products containing Irbesartan.

The recall has been issued to pharmacies and wholesalers so patients do not need to have their medication checked.

Irbesartan is mostly used to treat high blood pressure but may also be used among some kidney patients.

The drug regulator said the recall was “precautionary” and “no evidence” that the chemical impurity had caused any harm to patients.

Experts stressed the need not to stop taking medicines suddenly without first consulting your pharmacist or doctor.

And they cautioned that abruptly stopping medication for high blood pressure could be risky.

Dr Alison Cave, MHRA’s Chief Safety Officer, said: “Patient safety is at the heart of what we do.

“We are recalling batches of certain sartan-containing products as a precaution as we continue our investigation.

“It is important that healthcare professionals check their stocks for quarantine and return these batches.

“If you are taking an affected product, keep taking the medication.

“Speak with your doctor or pharmacist before stopping any treatment, they can address any concerns and can advise you on the best course of action.

“Previous recalls of these types of products in 2018, 2019 and June 2021 are part of an ongoing investigation.

“The MHRA is working with other drug regulators on this issue.”
