Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Wells said: “We are aware of the tragic death of Dr. Gary Jenkins and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.
“We are in contact with both the Royal Prosecution Department and Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah regarding his death, and this matter will now be advanced as a murder investigation.
I would like to thank the public for their invaluable assistance as we continue to investigate the circumstances of this incident.
While the three people have been charged, we are still appealing for information. No matter how little information that may seem, it could be crucial to our investigation.
“In particular, we’d love to hear from anyone who was in Bute Park during the early hours of Tuesday, July 20.
“We specifically want to speak to anyone who has been near the Millennium Footbridge, which connects Butte Park and Sophia Gardens, between midnight and 1.20 am.”
Jason Edwards, 25, and Lee William Strickland, 36, both from Cardiff, and the 16-year-old are due to appear in Cardiff Crown Court on August 23.
Patients, friends and colleagues paid tribute to Dr. Jenkins’ death.
A colleague wrote: “For Gary, he was a well liked and respected fellow and a lot of fun working with him. He was a wonderful, kind and hardworking psychiatrist who will be greatly missed in Cardiff and Valley.”
