Liverpool defender Andy Robertson insists his ankle injury is “not too big” but a ligament injury will keep him out of the Premier League’s opening game in Norwich and possibly the first month of the season.
The Scotland international had to be helped off the field in the friendly with Athletic Bilbao on Sunday and further assessment revealed a problem that will prevent him from playing this weekend.
Liverpool would welcome Chelsea to Anfield at the end of August, and Robertson could now target that match for his comeback. Jurgen Klopp’s side then travel to Leeds United on September 12, which could be a more realistic date after ligament injuries.
“The scan doesn’t say anything too big, but there is some damage to the ligaments that needs to be fixed,” he wrote on Twitter. “I will vaccinate every day so that I can help the team again sooner rather than later.”
His injury makes it increasingly likely that Costas Tsimekas, who managed just six minutes in the Premier League in his first season with the Reds last season, will start his first league game on the Carrow Road although James Milner would be another option to replace.
Speaking after Liverpool’s last pre-season friendly at Anfield against Osasuna – which they won 3-1 – Klopp said: “I think we were lucky. It could have been a lot worse. It won’t be very long. I’m not sure if it will be. Before or after the international break, but, like I said, I think we were lucky.”
Roberto Firmino scored twice in the 3-1 win with Takumi Minamino also on the score sheet during an impressive display. One of the players who was the subject of transfer speculation, Xherdan Shaqiri, did not participate. The Swiss international has been linked with a move to Lyon.
